Airports

Weather observations, forecasts and warnings are important parts of guaranteeing smooth and safe air traffic at airports around the world. Especially during the cold season, highly effective de-icing machines have to be prepared to keep the planes flying, whatever the weather. Ice and snow on runways can have fatal consequences.

But there are often a number of questions that come with the use of expensive surface and de-icing treatments: How long will they work? When do they need to be applied or re-applied?

Reliable weather sensors help determine the right times to use the right treatments. These precision sensors are installed in the runways and will operate for many years under the most extreme conditions. These are both active and passive pavement sensors that provide constant data on freezing temperatures, grip and friction, water film, runway temperatures and more.

Intelligent sensors to measure runway conditions can be easily integrated into an existing weather sensor system. Active runway sensors can both cool and heat and thus determine the actual current freezing point, even with the constant use of liquid salt concentrates. The active sensors then pass the data they collect to the passive sensors on the runways. This allows precise and up-to-the-minute information to be collected and monitored.
